The University of Nebraska Engineers without Borders Chapter will present two of their recent projects in Zambia and Madagascar.

Zambia Team:
Isabella Sangimino
Braeden Smoyer
Keithen Cudly

Our team will share the technical process behind designing a pedestrian bridge to connect two rural communities, including design calculations, construction preparation, and the challenges of working thousands of miles from the construction site. We’ll discuss the lessons learned from collaborating across cultures and how these experiences are shaping us into more capable and empathetic engineers. Finally, we’ll highlight the long-term benefits the bridge will bring and how engineering can be a powerful tool for positive change.

Madagascar Team:
Jack McDowall
Jamie Krab

Our team will discuss the engineering process behind designing, installing, and sustaining small-scale solar power systems for schools in Kianjavato, Madagascar, a region isolated from any grid. We'll cover the challenges of designing robust, low-cost PV systems in a remote setting: optimizing solar arrays and battery storage for tropical conditions, implementing reliable well constructed DC circuits for LED lighting,  and ensuring the security of our system. Lastly, we'll explain how we communicate and collaborate with our partner community to allow community involvement, making our system long lasting.
